SEOmoz, Is It Worth It For Small Business SEO?

When you first set up your business, you’ll have a mountain of questions in front of you;

  • how do I get more customers?

  • how do I sell more?

  • How do I get the message out, that we’re here? etc etc.

A lot of these questions will come down to effective marketing and in most cases with a small business, this will start with digital and online marketing, as it tends to be cheaper with fewer barriers.

So what is SEOmoz

Moz is a SaaS company based in Seattle, that sells inbound marketing and marketing analytics software subscriptions. They provide SEO tools for keyword research, link building, site audits, and page optimization insights in order to allow companies to gain a better view of their search engine position and ranking.

How can it be used:

SEO Moz provides a range of services and tools for small businesses as well as larger ones, so we’ll break down how each can be used for improving your SEO, assuming you already know of the importance of keyword research, link building and on-site SEO.

Moz Keyword Explorer

This tool provides keyword suggestions since keywords are terms your target audience are searching and therefore you wish to rank for, knowing key stats about these is very important. Here is where Moz’s keyword explorer comes in handy, for each keyword you’re able to get the SEO competition estimates as well as opportunity, SERP features, saved lists, and search volume data which allows you to make informed decisions as to which keywords to target and which you’re already ranking for but could improve on.

This is of course very important. In essence, the Moz Keyword Explorer allows you to cull any keywords that wouldn’t be fruitful and hone in on keywords that will be particularly valuable and perhaps could offer an advantage over others in your market.

Is it free? No. But there is a 30-day free trial before you have to obtain a full package.

Open Site Explorer

Moz’s open site explorer provides link data. Why is this important? Well, not all links are made the same, some provide more ranking juice than others; they come from a domain and/or page with a higher domain authority than others and therefore can offer you more value. Open Site Explorer shows you how much authority a particular page or overall domain has which allows you to clearly assess if a site is worth targeting or not.

Of course, there is another, just as important use of Moz’s site explorer. Analysing your own domain and page authority, a number of links pointing in and a multitude of other factors can help you to spot pages that need more work or on the other side, your best-performing pages.

Is it free? To an extent, your daily number of searches is capped, after which you will have to sign up for a 30-day trial or full account.

MozBar

MozBar is an SEO browser tool in the form of a chrome extension, it allows you to access other Moz tools on the go, Search Engine Results Page analysis, Site/competitor research and Link profile analysis.

What these features actually do:

SERP (Search Engine Results Page) Analysis:

The MozBar instantly shows you statistics about each of the results you see in the search engine results page.

Site/Competitor Research:

For every URL you visit while browsing the net you instantly get link metrics at the top of the page, which includes the MozRank, Domain Authority, subdomain metrics and more.

Link Profile Analysis

When browsing on a page you will receive detailed information about a page's inbound links, including quick comparisons to the site's domain and subdomain.

Of the tools SEO Moz have released, this one seems geared to marketing professionals or those wanting to really deep dive into marketing.

Is it free? Yes. Simply sign up for a free Moz Community account here though the more advanced features are of course restricted to pro accounts.

How does this help small businesses:

Alternative to Google Pagerank. MozRank quantifies link popularity and is Moz’s version of Google’s classic PageRank algorithm. Pages earn MozRank based on the other pages on the web that link to them and the MozRank of those linking pages. The higher the MozRank of the linking pages, the higher the MozRank of the page receiving those links. In this way, it reflects a type of raw link equity for any given webpage on the Internet.

Example small business that used it

When it comes to digital marketing, and any type of marketing for that fact, data is key; there is no such thing as too much information when it comes to spending money and time. For this reason alone SEOMoz is very useful for small businesses SEO. Getting accurate data from a reliable source can help steer you in the right direction and at minimal to no cost for the basics and free trial versions, Why not? Even if it’s just for 30 days.
